When studying abroad in Clermont-Ferrand, it is very important to find student accommodation that is both central to amenities and within close proximity to your university. Some foreign students make the mistake of securing housing on the outskirts of the city, only to find that they can’t easily access the city center without walking long distances or paying for expensive taxi rides. So be sure to thoroughly research the area of any potential rental to ensure you don’t end up in an inconvenient or undesirable location. At the very least be sure you are located close to one of the major tram or bus lines. Clermont-Ferrand has a great transportation system (tramway, trains and buses) that should make it easy for you to get to your university as well as many activities and amenities in town.
The best cities for students attending Université Blaise Pascal and L’ecole De Commerce are: Clermont-Ferrand, Beaumont, Chamalières, Aubière and Royat. These cities are on two of the main bus lines, the B and the A which offer late night service. For those at Université D’auvergne, the best cities to reside in are: Aubière, Beaumont, Clermont-Ferrand and Cournon-d’Auvergne. These are all located in proximity to the universities. During bus strikes and general transportation strikes, transportation by foot is possible to these universities. In these areas, students may find grocers such as Géant, Auchan and Intermarché close to student housing.
If you like nightlife and do not have a driver’s license or do not have transportation, it is a good idea to live in the city center. The trams run until 4am daily and there is a shuttle to and from certain bars that are far away from the city center. In Paris you have transportation 24 hours/ 7 days a week. In Clermont-Ferrand your options are limited depending where you live. The further you are away from the city center, the more problems you may have when there is a general transportation strike. It is very important to consider that during transportation strikes, classes are still in session.
